For example, ACOG recommends that pregnant women consume 600 micrograms of folic acid per day during pregnancy to help prevent birth defects of the brain and spine. While some folic acid can be derived from foods like fortified grains and green leafy vegetables, ACOG recommends supplementing with a prenatal vitamin to make sure you’re getting the recommended amount.
